Rebekah Laidsaar-Powell

Dr Rebekah Laidsaar-Powell, PhD is a Research Fellow within the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney. The goal of Rebekah’s research is to improve the clinical care and psychosocial wellbeing of people with cancer, and their family carers. Her research is both qualitative and quantitative, with a focus on translation of research findings and implementation into clinical practice. Rebekah is internationally recognised for her work on the involvement of family carers in the clinical ‘triad’ (health professional – patient – carer). She has led the TRIO (TRIadic Oncology) project for over a decade, where she led development of world first clinical guidelines and online education to improve health professionals’ communication with carers. These guidelines have been utilised in policy nationally (Cancer Council/Cancer Australia Optimal Care Pathway) and internationally (US Academies Roundtable on Quality Care; Canadian Patient-and-Family Centred Care Policy). Rebekah is passionate about family carers feeling that they are empowered, involved, and supported within the cancer care system. She also has lived experience as a family carer, and a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards of supporting a loved one with a chronic illness.
